Match Reports

Sunday 8 th March - Stevenage Borough Kites V LGCE Reds

With many postponements over the past few months, due to bad weather, many would have thought we would get away with playing the rest of our games this season in non winter conditions. Unfortunately Sunday treated us to our match in horrible rain and windy conditions. Last season we never played well in this sort of weather and Sunday was no different, but for a few exceptions!

We were against the wind in the 1 st half and it only took a couple of minutes for the rain to arrive. The opening exchanges were fairly even with both keepers making early saves.

It wasn’t long before we took the lead, Dean won the ball in midfield and found Jordan on the edge of the area, he chipped the ball in to Sam D who fired his shot past the keeper. The lead didn’t last long as from the re-start Stevenage broke down the right with their tricky winger and he crossed for their forward to slide in and turn the ball past James.

Stevenage now looked the most likely to score again and their pressure paid off when a wind assisted long ball saw their forward outpace our defence and with James choosing to stand his ground he shot home from 12 yards. We needed to show our character now and this was where me and Luke felt a bit let down as only 4 or 5 seemed prepared to battle against the conditions and a now confident Stevenage team.

Two of the few players combined to well and nearly got an equaliser. Leon won the ball in our half and found Jordan on the left, he took on the defender before hitting an unstoppable shot against the post, the goal is probably still shaking now?!

HALF TIME - Stevenage Borough Kites 2-1 LGCE Reds

So 2-1 down at half time and with a couple of subs choosing to keep their tracksuits on it was down to the remaining 13 players to dig deep for a result.

The 2 nd half took a while to get going, we were creating chances but not making the most of them and it meant Adam and Carlton had to be on their toes at the back to stop the Stevenage attacks. We finally got the equaliser when a long James kick was flicked on by Sam D for Jordan, he latched on to it and lobbed the ball over the on-rushing keeper into the net. Now we had our heads up and went searching for the winner.

It wasn’t until 2 mins from the end that we got the winner. We won a corner and this meant the big man (Carlton) making his way into the Stevenage box. A pin point delivery from Jordan, was met by a superb header from Carlton, giving the keeper no chance and us a 3-2 lead. There was still time for one last Stevenage attack but the final shot went wide.

So a valuable win for us in the end, in awful conditions, but this was the same for BOTH teams and we must show the hunger to play in all weather conditions if we are to finish in top spot.

All credit to the family and friends who supported us and stood there in the horrible conditions, me and Luke really appreciate your loyal support. We hope to see a big support this Sunday when top of the table Clifton come to Letchworth for what will hopefully be an excellent match and could possibly be the title decider.

Sunday 1 st March - Fairlands Youth V LGCE Reds

After another month without a game we were back in action, but with all our recent postponements, we found ourselves 13 points behind the leaders Clifton with 4 games in hand. With Clifton not playing for the next 2 weeks, it gave us an opportunity to close the gap before our big game against them in 2 weeks time.

Our performance for the first 10 mins was understandably rusty to say the least, with mis-placed passes and bad connection when striking the ball, but this seemed to change once we scored. Charlie did well on the right and sent in a deep cross, Kieran B came in from the left to meet it and found Jordan who thumped it past the keeper into the roof of the net. This settled us down a bit, Adam and Dean started to boss the midfield and the back 4 of Kieran F, Zak, Carlton and Kane were looking nice and solid.

We went 2 up with a moment of brilliance from Jordan, some of the goals he has scored this season would be shown over and over again on the telly if scored in the premier league and this was one of them. On the edge of the area, he controlled a high ball with his right foot and before the ball touched the ground again he struck an unstoppable left foot volley past the keeper.

Fairlands were by no means just defending and had a couple of chances to pull a goal back but James kept his concentration well and made saves when called upon. Now for our big centre half to get himself on the score sheet. At last he got his head onto a cross into the box! We forced a corner on the right which was cleared back out to the taker Jordan, he crossed the ball straight back into the danger where the big man headed the ball down into the corner of the goal. The bus cliché now comes to mind as we’ve waited all season for Carlton to score with his head and then he scores 2 in 2 minutes. This time straight from Jordan’s corner he got his head on the ball and although the keeper got a hand to this one he was unable to stop it from going in.

HALF TIME - Fairlands Youth 0- 4 LGCE Reds

The 2 nd half was a bit flat compared to the first and played out a comfortable 2 nd 30 mins to get the 3 points we wanted. We again had the majority of possession and chances but only managed to find the net once. Jordan completed our scoring when he was sent through by Kieran B and placed it past the keeper from a tight angle for an all left foot hat-trick. He went close to a 4 th shortly after but was denied by the cross bar.

With the defence losing a bit of shape Fairlands created some good chances but with some off target shooting and James battling to keep his clean sheet they were unable to get any reward. With 10 mins to go we bought Jordan back to centre half with Zak to keep it tight. Fairlands then had their best chance to score but Jordan was there to clear for a corner from inside the 6 yard box. (might be your new position Jordan)

Zak had plenty of trust in his defence as with a couple of minutes to go he went on a mazy run. He dribbled the ball out of defence and headed down the left wing, beating a couple of players along the way he got into the Fairlands area and pulled the ball back for the support. Big Sam couldn’t connect with the cross, but Charlie did when coming in from the right and struck the ball against the bar with Dean unlucky not to get to the rebound before the ball was cleared.

The final score was 5-0 without being pushed too hard, but good attitudes for the whole match and 5 excellent goals saw us through as well as a team effort clean sheet! A quick word for the unfortunate Aidan, who was unable to take part today after feeling ill just before kickoff, we all hope he’s feeling better now.

Now the games will be coming thick and fast so it is vital we continue with the good recent attitudes at training and this will continue to the games and we can build on attempting to catch Clifton at the top.

Sunday 1st February - Potton Colts V LGCE Reds

This was our first league game since 30th November with only a cup game two weeks ago in between. On a small pitch we started the game kicking into a strong wind. Missing key players including Adam and Harry we didn't start well and looked a totally different team to that of November and Potton didn't play like a team third from bottom. Their play maker in midfield run the game and we struggled to get to grips with his long throws and superb deliveries from set pieces.

We went behind in the first five minutes when we struggled to clear a corner and a wind assisted shot was deflected giving James no chance. We then had chances but failed to hit the target and when we did, it seemed to be straight at the keeper.

We found ourselves 2-0 down half way through the half after another corner wasn't dealt with and a soft header wasn't held by James and the rebound was smashed in to the net. We started to get into the game after this but were unable to get the all important goal. With the combination of wayward finishing and no luck of the ball dropping to us inside the box, even the ever reliable Jordan couldn't find a way past the Potton keeper in the first half.

HALF TIME - Potton Colts 2-0 LGCE Reds

Although we were a long way from our best, me and Luke were confident that with the wind we would get ourselves back into the game if we moved up a gear. Unfortunately this didn't happen until the final ten minutes and it was too late by then.

It was in fact Potton who got the next goal when basic errors from our keeper and our defence at a goal kick let them in. A poor kick could have been dealt with if our defence had been in front of the Potton players but instead, the ball went straight to the Potton forward who scored from just inside the box.

It took us ten minutes into the second half to get a goal when Charlie used his pace and skill to race clear on the left before cutting in and crossing in to Kieran B who beat a defender and slotted past the impressive Potton keeper. This should have given us the confidence to take control of the game but it was Potton who still looked the stronger team.

Both teams went close before another error let Potton in for their fourth. Again a goal kick was our downfall when it went straight out for a throw in no more than twelve yards from the goal line. A quick long throw found the Potton forward and his cross-cum-shot went over James into the far corner of the goal.

This seemed to kick us in to life and we sacrificed a defender for an extra forward in an attempt to get something from the game. The final ten minutes saw us nearly rescue something but eventually run out of time. We made it 4-2 when Jordan raced clear and fired past the keeper. It was now end to end and James done well coming out to shut down their forward when clean through. We also had some good chances but their keeper was having a great game. It was 4-3 with the last kick of the game when a long ball forward was cleared by the keeper, straight to Kieran B who hit a first time shot from just inside the Potton half, over the keeper, into the net.

Unfortunately we left it to the last ten minutes to get on top but me and Luke felt three out of the four Potton goals could have been prevented. Maybe the lack of games is a factor but it also looked like the lads thought we would win without too much effort as we were near the top and Potton were near the bottom, which is not the right attitude to have. MOM was given to Leon as when he was on the pitch he made some excellent tackles and also went close to scoring a couple of times but most importantly showed a will to win that was sometimes missing from some of the other lads.

Sunday 18 th January Austen Arrowheads V LGCE Reds

After 7 weeks of no game we finally got back into action in the League Cup, away to Austen Arrowheads, who sit in 2 nd position in Division 2. (2 leagues above us).

We started the game brightly and looked like we would carry on from where we left off in November. For most of the first 10 minutes we were camped in the Austen Arrowheads half and created a couple of half chances as well as being switched on at the back for their breakaways.

We looked the better team and took a deserved lead when Harry put a good ball into Jordan’s feet, he turned his marker and slid the ball through to ‘Big Sam’ who shot passed the keeper. Goals have a funny affect in football and this one totally changed the game for the rest of the half. Either we stopped doing what we had been for the first 10 minutes or Austen Arrowheads upped their game, from my point of view it looked like we stopped playing.

After some good play in our area, one of their forwards scored from 8 yards out to equalise. A couple of minutes later we were 2-1 down when their other forward picked the ball up just inside his own half, he took the ball down the left, through 2 or 3 half hearted challenges and slotted past James at the near post. Take nothing away from the lad for having the skill and confidence to score a goal like that, but with better defending he might not have got that far.

We had a good chance to equalise when Kieran B did well to turn on the edge of the area and had a shot that went across goal and wide. Just before half time we conceded a third to go in 3-1 down.

HALF TIME - Austen Arrowheads 3-1 LGCE Reds

We had a good chat at half time and explained that when playing decent teams we need to play well for more than just 10 minutes of the half and asked for a big 30 minutes from the lads.

The 2 nd half was quite even with both teams having chances to score. The 2 division gulf wasn’t obvious at all. About half way through the half we got a free kick about 5 yards outside the area. Jordan lined it up but failed to hit the target for once, this turned out to be a practice one as a couple of minutes later he curled one into the top corner from a similar position to make it 3-2.

We were now on top again and caused panic in their area after a couple of excellent deliveries from corners, but unfortunately we were unable to find an equaliser. With 5 minutes to go we took a defender off and replaced him with a forward to push for the equaliser. We had a good opportunity when ‘big Sam’ took a quick long throw in and Jordan forced their keeper into an excellent save. With a couple of minutes to go and with us pushing players forward searching for a goal we got caught out by a quick breakaway down the right, which resulted with a cross to the back post for a simple tap in for 4-2.

An excellent 2 nd half performance saw us push Austen Arrowheads all the way and we can hold our heads up high. If we continue to play like that for the rest of the season and have good attitudes then promotion should be no problem.

All the lads played their part today and it’s important to note that as a ‘squad’ everyone is making a telling contribution. Jordan picked up MOM this week as his work rate and attitude is a credit, along with his ability to score and create goals week in week out, but as said earlier everyone deserves credit for the improvement we have made so far.

Thanks to the supporters for turning out on a cold and windy Sunday morning.

Sunday 30th November Clifton Colts V LGCE Reds

Sunday saw us travel to top of the league and unbeaten Clifton, for a must win game if we were to get back on level points at the top of the table, after our defeat against Baldock two weeks ago.

We kicked off against the wind and up a slight slope, but this didn’t prevent us from being the better team.  We put instant pressure on the Clifton defence and forced a few corners but couldn’t get the early break through.  We kept the pressure up and limited Clifton to long shots that James dealt with easily.  Some of our attacking play was of the highest standard, along with our defence stopping everything thrown at them, with the help of Adam tackling anything that moved.  He was like a man possessed as he continuously broke up the Clifton attacks with strong but fair tackles to set us up on our own attacks.

We had to wait until the 20th minute to get the goal we deserved.  Good work between Big Sam and Jordan on the right saw Jordan send a dangerous cross in along the ground that the keeper spilled to Kieran B, who calmly took the ball round the keeper and slotted past the covering defender on the line and into the net.

We failed to hold on to our lead though when Clifton broke away down the right, their quick winger got behind our defence and sent in a decent cross which we struggled to clear.  James made a couple of good blocks but couldn’t stop the third effort and we were back on level terms at 1-1, two minutes after taking the lead.

Our response was spot on as we finished the half very strong and we scored with virtually the last kick of the first half.  A through ball for Big Sam saw him reach the ball before the keeper to dink it over him and the line before the defenders could get back to clear.

HALF TIME - Clifton Colts 1-2 LGCE Reds

Me and Luke were full of praise for the lads during the break as their attitudes and work rate were exactly as we asked for and another half of the same was required for us to get the all important win we all wanted.

With the wind and slope in our favour we started the second half as we finished the first.  It only took five minutes to extend our lead with a goal that typified our performance.  A cross from the left didn’t seem to be causing any problems but Aiden had other ideas.  As he came in from the right, to keep the move alive, he hit the ball first time towards goal but the ball hit the near post and rolled across the goal, again seeming to be going out of play.  This time Big Sam kept the ball alive, he gave it to Harry who crossed on to the head of Jordan who glanced it in.

With a two goal cushion we introduced Leon in to midfield for Big Sam to give the back four some extra protection, as we expected to be put under pressure, leaving Jordan to lead the line on his own.  This change worked in our favour as now Adam and Leon were breaking the Clifton attacks up before they could trouble our excellent back four of Calum, Carlton, Zak and Kane, with Aiden, Harry and Kieran B supporting Jordan on our attacks.  An injury to Harry saw Big Sam replace him on the left and it was Sam who made the fourth.  He picked the ball up in his own half and played a perfect pass through to the excellent Jordan and he, as he has done all season, placed the ball past the keeper and in to the corner of the goal.

We were now enjoying our football and confidence was high and with a couple of minutes left we completed the scoring.  Kane, Big Sam and Jordan kept the ball well on the left and forced a corner. Jordan put in another dangerous delivery which was cleared out of the area where MOM Adam was waiting.  He controlled the ball and let fly from just outside the box into the bottom corner for a fully deserved goal, from a player that is more at home when defending.  This goal was true reward for an outstanding performance from Adam that all our players acknowledged when celebrating the goal with him.

So after our worst performance of the season two weeks ago against Baldock, we today produced a faultless display, to prove that on our day with the right attitudes and commitment we can beat any team in our league.  Clifton were today out classed all over the pitched, which was even more pleasing when they have dominated all their games so far.  The celebrations from the lads after the game showed just how much it meant to them.  We are now back on top of the table and hopefully there to stay. Well done lads and many thanks to our support, on a cold and wet Sunday morning.

Sunday 16th November Baldock Town Knights V LGCE Reds

Sunday saw us with our return fixture against Baldock, just two weeks after our home game against them, which was our toughest so far - and today was no different.

On a tiny pitch in wet and windy conditions me and Luke knew we would be up against it and tried to get it through to the lads that Baldock would be more determined to get revenge on the 5-1 victory we had two weeks ago.

It was obvious from the kick off Baldock were up for the game as they were camped in our half and this was the pattern for the majority of the game.  We struggled to get out of our half as Baldock were better all over the park, passing the ball well, stronger in the tackle and causing us problems as we struggled to deal with their determination.

As Baldock attacked in numbers it left some space at the back and after seven minutes a long clearance saw us counter attack, Charlie crossed from the right and Jordan was on hand to tap in from 6 yards.  This was totally against the run of play and very harsh on Baldock.  This didn't change the way the game continued and it was all Baldock again for the rest of the half.  It was no surprise when they equalised with a good free kick that James could only help into the net and it wasn't long before Baldock had the lead.  Some more bad defending, something that has been a plus point so far this season, saw Baldock extend their lead and they were 3-1 up by half time with two goals that could have been avoided with more determination and commitment.

HALF TIME - Baldock Town Knights 3-1 LGCE Reds

During half time me and Luke expressed our disappointment to the lads and repeated our words from before the game that our attitudes needed to be right, as we would need to work hard for the win to keep our 100% record in tact.

This seemed to be ignored as the second half started as the first finished, with constant Baldock pressure.  We were way off the standard set so far this season and Baldock were making the most of this.

Again we scored against the run of play.

We forced a corner and a good delivery from Jordan saw a Baldock defender put the ball into the net for 3-2.  This should have given us the boost to try and get something from the game, but it wasn’t to be. Baldock wanted to win the game more and would have scored earlier but for a couple of good saves from James.  However, an unfortunate mistake from James ended up with him pushing the ball into his own net from a well taken corner.  Baldock added another quickly afterwards to put the game out of reach.

Jordan did add another goal for us near the end when he scored a superb goal from 20 yards, striking the ball well, giving the keeper no chance high to his left.

At the final whistle the disappointment was obvious amongst the players with Baldock celebrating a well deserved victory.

So our first league defeat of the season and hopefully a lesson was learnt this week proving attitudes need to right even if we have previously beaten our opponents or where they are in the league.

MOM for today went to Adam who playing in centre midfield, set the example to others, winning tackle after tackle all over the pitch and working his socks off trying to stop the constant Baldock pressure.

Sunday 09th November - Manuden Juniors V LGCE Reds

Back to Manuden for the Reds this week, as we made the long trip in the League Cup this time.

Our second league game in September was a close encounter and we needed to be at our best if we wanted to progress in the competition.

After the well respected 2 minutes silence we kicked off.  We had the wind behind us and were kicking down the hill and thought we had got the perfect start.  The ball was knocked back to Leon who struck it past their defence for Jordan to run on to and score, this was ruled out for offside.

Manuden pressured us well and went ahead after 5 minutes when we were slow to stop a cross from the right and as Aidan tried to hook the ball away at the far post, he unfortunately knocked it past James and into our goal.

We reacted well to this and for the next 15 minutes we did everything but level the score.  Their goalkeeper looked unbeatable, as he made outstanding saves from Harry, Jordan, Big Sam and the best of the lot from Calum's fierce strike from the edge of the box.  It took something special to beat him.  Jordan ran on to a great through ball and as the keeper came out he delicately lobbed the ball over him into the net.  The relief was obvious and a second Eagles goal soon arrived.  Adam won a great tackle on the half way line and played the ball through for our danger man Jordan, this time as the keeper slid out, Jordan coolly chipped it over his body in to the bottom corner.  These two finishes were of the highest quality and admired by both sets of supporters.

We added another just before half time when Harry took a quick throw on the left for Kieran B to run onto and he placed the ball brilliantly into the bottom corner to make it 3 superb first half goals for us and 3-1 at the break.

HALF TIME - Manuden Juniors 1-3 LGCE Reds

We made it clear to the lads that the next ten minutes were crucial as we expected some strong pressure from Manuden as they tried to make the most of the wind and the slope, now in their favour.  To our pleasure the whole team worked their socks off to prevent Manuden creating goal-scoring opportunities.  The back four of Kieran F, Zak, Adam and Kane were superb all game and new signing Dean was having a great debut in centre midfield.  He showed what an asset he will be if he can play like that each week.

We extended our lead when Charlie broke clear on the right and his cross shot went in at the far post with Harry making sure it was over the line!  This seemed to deflate the Manuden players and increase the belief of our lads and Harry made use of another quick throw to send Jordan through to his third of the match.

We were playing our best football of the season during the second half and as already mentioned this was against a strong wind and up the slope.  The confidence was obvious throughout the team and James showed his value with some excellent goalkeeping to keep the score at 5-1.

We created a good chance to increase our lead when a well-driven cross from the left found big Sam who blazed over with the keeper stranded.   With a few minutes left Jordan did add to the score when he and Charlie battled well on the left to win the ball and a quick one-two sent Jordan in to the area and he unleashed a bullet of a shot with his left foot in to the top corner.  This was Jordan's fourth goal of the game, his 22nd of the season so far and most of them have been outstanding finishes.

Zak picked up MOM today with a class defensive performance.  He organised the defence well all game, was strong in the tackle and rarely gave the ball away. On numerous occasions he prevented the Manuden attacks getting near our goal.  The one occasion James was beaten, he raced back to clear off the line.

So a 6-1 victory against a decent Manuden side proves how well we are playing and although Jordan is banging in the goals, the results and performances from the TEAM are the main reason for the success so far this season.  The defence with James in goal have been solid, the midfield excellent, supporting both defence and attack and our strikers are all scoring goals.  This can only be good and long may it continue.

Sunday 2nd November LGCE Reds V Baldock Town Knights

A home game against Baldock Town Knights saw us with our toughest so far.

With the morning matches called off due to the rain, we were fortunate to play our game but from the warm up we could see that the pitch would be heavy and may prevent us from playing our normal passing game.

Baldock started well and looked strong going forward but it was us that opened the scoring in the 4th minute.  A quick throw on the left from Harry saw Jordan through on goal and as the keeper came out to shut the angle down, Jordan coolly slotted the ball into the net at the near post.  A couple of minutes after the goal our Captain, Zak, got injured and had to come off.  A re-shuffle was needed along the back 4 with Adam dropping in to defence and Leon coming on in midfield.

The next 15 minutes were even with chances at both ends as both teams played some good football on a difficult surface. Calum was having an excellent game in centre midfield winning tackles and causing problems on the attack and it was Calum who won the free kick for our second goal.  Although the ball ended up in the Baldock goal, the whistle had already gone for a free kick just outside the area.  Jordan took the free kick, which the keeper parried out, but Kieran B was on hand to hook the ball in off the far post.

Shortly after it was 3-0, Big Sam done well on the right, using his strength to get into the area where three defenders tried to tackle him but one of them got it wrong and bought him down for a penalty.  Jordan confidently scored the pen to the keepers left.  Just before half time Baldock pulled one back when a good move on the left saw their striker gives James no chance as he put the ball into the top corner from 12 yards.

HALF TIME - LGCE Reds 3-1 Baldock Town Knights

Baldock started the second half well and put our defence under constant pressure, but James was again playing well and made some important stops.

We scored against the run of play to put an end to the Baldock pressure, with 15 minutes left.  Jordan interrupted a Baldock goal kick and played a one two with Big Sam before chipping the ball over the keeper into the top corner for another hat trick.

Zak had now recovered and went back on to steady the defence and we were now back on top.  We got another free kick on the edge of the area which Kieran B lined up. He struck the ball well but just too high as it hit the cross bar, the ball rebounded to Carlton who poked it goalwards and Aidan touched it in from close range.

At the final whistle it was fair to say that Baldock were easily the best opposition we faced so far and a test that we definitely needed.  It was good to see us withstand some good pressure from their attack with our defence and goalkeeper coping well. Kieran F, now man of the match at right back with a faultless display, reading the game and tackling well as well as rarely giving the ball away.

So a 5-1 victory, which was enough to keep us top of the league on goal difference.  Me and Luke are looking forward to the upcoming fixtures, which will see some tough games.  This shouldn't be a problem with a positive attitude and performances to match.  Keep up the good work Lads!

Sunday 26th October - Arlesey Town V LGCE Reds

Sunday saw us make the short trip to Arlesey for our game in hand over current leaders Clifton Colts. A win seeing us go top of the league on goal difference, with a 100% record so far.

The first 10 mins were very even with both keepers being tested and this set the pattern for most of the game. It was our goal machine Jordan who opened the scoring when he cooling shot past the keeper from just inside the box. We started to get on top, with Kieran B pulling the strings from midfield and we came close on a couple of occasions before ‘big’ Sam doubled our lead when he also scored from inside the area. We soon made it 3-0 when some good football saw Jordan and Aidan with the opportunity to score and it was Aidan who got there first to slot past the stranded keeper.

This spurred Arlesey into life and they pulled a goal back when a mix up between the back 4 and James let their forward in to score. We restored our 3 goal lead with the move of the match, Carlton started it from the back and after good work involving Kieran B, ‘big’ Sam, and Jordan, the ball was fed out to Harry on the right who put a ‘Beckham’ cross to the far post where Charlie was on hand to tap in from 6 yards, against his former team. Arlesey pulled another goal back just before half time to ensure they stayed in the game.

HALF TIME - Arlesey Town 2-4 LGCE Reds

The 2nd half started like the first with both keepers making some good saves and the next goal was going to be very important and deservedly it was us who got it. Some constant pressure saw us win a corner on the left, Jordan delivered another excellent ball into the near post where Carlton challenged a defender and touched it in. This goal seemed to give us the momentum to finish the game off our 6th goal was a ‘wonder’ goal from Aidan. A through ball saw Aidan in a race with the full back to reach the pass, they seemed to arrive at the same time and Aidan hit a superb first time shot, with the outside of his right foot, over the keeper and into the goal from 20 yards out. James again did well in goal, making some good one on one saves to keep the Arlesey strikers out before we completed the scoring. A corner from the right was met by Aidan at the near post, he thought he’d got his hat trick as he flicked the ball towards the far post, but as he run off celebrating it hit the post and came out. As it happens, Kieran B was on hand to score from the rebound to cap of an excellent performance. Kieran today showed how good he can be as he run the game from midfield.

We ran out 7-2 winners against a decent and physical Arlesey side and players are now putting in consistent performances to ensure they keep their place. Again we scored some excellent team goals for our large following to cheer about and this can only bring confidence to all involved. All these positives will certainly be needed in our next 4 games at least as we have some strong tests coming up.

Back at home this week for the Reds, usual time, usual pitch and same outcome at the final whistle as previous games. Stevenage Borough Red Kites were the visitors today and on paper we were expected to win.

After a photo shoot for the lads to model their new tracksuits, kindly sponsored by Willmott Dixon, we got down to preparing for the match. Me and Luke made a few changes again this week, showing that even though we’re playing well we still have healthy competition for all positions. Calum started at right back after impressing last week and Charlie joined him on the right, playing on the wing, where he also did well last week. This meant Aidan moving into the middle in place of Kieran B.

We chose to play against a fairly strong breeze in the first half and were put under a bit of pressure. Stevenage got in behind us a few times in the first 10 minutes but with no shots for James to save. We also had a couple of chances, but neither team were able to break the deadlock. This changed after 15 minutes with a moment of brilliance from Jordan. Game after game he shows us how good he is and today was no different. He cut in from the left, beat a couple of defenders before unleashing an unstoppable shot with his left foot, over the keeper into the far corner. Superb! A couple of minutes later it was 2, Jordan again the scorer, this time using his pace to good effect. He found himself just inside the Stevenage half with just the sweeper to beat, who was a very good player himself. This didn’t faze Jordan, he knocked the ball past him, left him in his tracks and tucked the ball away. We made some changes, bringing on Kieran B and Matthew to keep the team fresh and got to half time 2-0 up.

Credit to the lads for an excellent first half team performance, especially the back 4 of Calum, Zak, Carlton and Kane for keeping the tricky Stevenage attackers at bay. Also James’ handling and kicking was superb, his long and accurate kicking against a strong wind set us up on some good attacks.

HALF TIME - LGCE Reds 2-0 Stevenage Borough Red Kites

We now had the wind behind us and started the second half strongly. We introduced Leon and Kieran F at half time and it was Leon who set up our 3 rd goal. He won a strong tackle in the centre of the pitch and put an inch perfect pass through to ‘Big’ Sam, the Stevenage keeper chose to stay on his line and Sam waited for the right moment before slotting it past him from 8 yards out for 3-0. With our next attack it was 4. An unfortunate clearance from a Stevenage defender got caught in the wind and span past the keeper.

To their credit Stevenage didn’t give up and got a goal. A ball over the top caught the defence out and as James came out to shut the angle down the forward poked it past him into the net.

We reacted well and some good pressure resulted in a corner on the left. Jordan and Harry were thinking way ahead of everyone else, they took a short corner and before anyone could react Jordan hit another unstoppable shot into the far corner for a superb hat trick. Carlton decided he was going to give Jordan some competition for goal of the game as he pushed up from defence. He beat a couple of players before playing a one/two, beat another in the area before smashing it into the top corner. We were really putting on a show now, but Stevenage were still creating chances at the other end. A high cross from the left saw James deal with it well and as he tried to grab the bouncing ball it somehow ended up in Leon’s hands for a penalty. Leon was distraught about this, but it was just one of those things and hopefully he can look back and laugh at it now?! As it happens, James made a great save from the penalty, pushing it round his right hand post for a corner. By this time Leon was back on his game and made an important header to clear the corner from danger.

This wasn’t the last moment of comedy that the lads produced as Jamie decided he was going to give us a giggle. A good cross from the right saw the keeper misjudge it and it looked odds on Jamie was going to get his first goal for the ‘reds’. This was not the case as he completely missed the ball with the goal at his mercy, but Harry was following up at the back post to show him how to do it, touching it into the unguarded goal for 7-1. (Sorry Jamie, had to mention it)

With a couple of minutes to go there was a worrying moment for us all, including the Stevenage players and supporters. Jamie, who is just getting back into his football after breaking his ankle, went in for a tackle and got caught on ‘that’ ankle. It was obvious he was in a lot of pain. Me, Luke and a member of the Stevenage management team ran on to help him, we made sure there were no broken bones before carrying him off. It is worth mentioning that the way Jamie was allowed as much time as he needed by the referee as well as the help from our opponents shows that the game was being played the right way with respect from and for everyone involved. Well done! Thankfully Jamie was ok in the end and shouldn’t be out for too long.

Jordan replaced Jamie and got himself another goal when he intercepted and Stevenage throw in, run through the defence and scored. (That’s Jordan’s version as I missed it!)

The final score was 8-1 and an excellent performance to match in windy conditions. In games like this its the attackers that get all the limelight, but the defence definitely deserve some credit, so well done to the excellent Calum, Kane, Carlton, Kieran F and our skipper Zak who kept their shape for most of the game and gave us the breathing space to attack in numbers. Also not forgetting James in goal, who’s faultless display and excellent penalty save earned him the MOM.

So another win for the reds, but some tougher games are on their way so keep training and playing well and there should be little problems. Thanks again to another excellent turn out by our supporters.

Sunday 12 th October - Roebuck Wanderers V LGCE Reds

Back to league action today with an away game against Roebuck Wanderers. We took a squad of 16 to the game hoping to give everyone a decent run out.

Roebuck started with only 10 players, which seemed to affect the way the lads approached the game. We didn’t start very well and some of the lads were trying to do the difficult pass or shot rather than the easy or more rewarding option and it wasn’t long until we realised we needed to get back to playing our passing game.

We showed how good we can be on 2 or 3 occasions down the right hand side. Kieran F, Aidan, Kieran B and Jordan played some excellent one and two touch football, which got us into good positions and forced their keeper into some good saves. We opened the scoring after about 10 mins when Kieran B shot over the keeper into the roof of the net from just inside the box. This should have settled us down, but it was Roebuck who looked the more likely to score and only for some poor finishing the score stayed at 1-0. Kieran B got his and our 2 nd when he took on 2 or 3 defenders in the box and as we expected him to shoot he decided to beat one more and slot past the keeper, who had stayed on his line. The 3 rd goal soon followed when Carlton sent Jordan through and as the keeper came off his line he delicately lobbed the ball over him and into the net from outside the box. We got to half time 3-0 up which probably flattered us a bit!

HALF TIME - Roebuck Wanderers 0 - 3 LGCE Reds

During half time me and Luke tried to get it through to the lads that just because Roebuck only had 10 players we still had to keep our shape and play our normal game, something that went in one ear and out the other as straight from the kick off Roebuck went on the attack and a weak shot beat James to his left. We quickly responded to this and started playing some excellent passing football, especially down the right with Calum and Charlie linking up well and putting some good crosses into the box for the forwards.

Jordan got his 2 nd with a really brave header. A lofted ball over the top of the defence from just outside the area saw the keeper favourite to collect, but Jordan chased it and out jumped the keeper to head into the goal. There was a bit of concern as both players ended up on the floor but thankfully both were ok. We were now playing with much more confidence and Jordan completed his 2 nd hat trick of the season so far with a strong shot from the edge of the box that was too powerful for the keeper. We were now 5-1 up but credit to Roebuck as they did not give up and they got a 2 nd goal when they caught us asleep again from the kick off. This didn’t affect the way we were attacking and ‘Big’ Sam got himself a goal after our best move of the game. Calum won the ball and took it up the right wing before playing Charlie in. He put a superb cross into the box perfect for ‘Big’ Sam to volley home and restore our 4 goal lead. This goal gave me and Luke the most pleasure, as it was something we’ve been working on in training.

A similar goal followed but this time Charlie took the ball into the box and fired past the keeper at the near post to put the game beyond doubt. There was still time for Roebuck to add to their tally as they scored soon after kicking off again. As the game reached its close Harry completed the scoring. He received the ball on the left and skipped past a defender to get clean through on goal, he took the ball into the area as the keeper chose to stay on his line and once close enough he gave to keeper no chance with a cool finish from six yards out. This capped off an excellent performance from him for the second week running and fully deserved the MOM.

The final score was 8-3 to the reds and in the end was quite comfortable, but we must treat every game the same even if our opponents don’t have a full squad.

So another win, making it 4 out of 4 in the league and some excellent football played for the majority of the game. Another big support for the lads and I'm sure this spurs them on during the game.

Sunday 05th October - Sawbridgeworth Reds V LGCE Reds (County Cup)

The first round of the county cup saw us visit Sawbridgeworth Reds from Division 1, a game that would be our toughest so far and one me and Luke were really looking forward to.

We had a good chat with the lads before the game and it was good to see them upbeat and confident that they were not there just to make the numbers up, this pleased me and Luke, after the way we approached last weeks game.

As expected, Sawbridgeworth were at us from the start, we couldn’t get to grips with their long throw, which they were using to good effect to get in behind us. We tried to warn the back four from the line but the fourth time this happened we paid the price. The ball went out for another throw on the left, we again switched off and the quick long throw sent their forward through to shoot past James for 1-0. This seemed to kick us into life and we began to create some chances. Just before the 15 minute mark we had a goal ruled out for offside, good battling from Jordan and Harry saw the ball fall to big Sam just outside the box, which unknown to both teams was just ahead of play. He struck the ball on the bounce, over the keeper and in, but the celebrations were short lived as the linesman had rightly flagged for offside.

A few minutes later we got the equaliser that we deserved. Kieran B broke through and as a defender tried to challenge him he brought him down for a penalty. Jordan gave the keeper no chance as he confidently struck the ball to the keepers right for 1-1. Both teams were playing some really good football now and the game was exciting and end to end with both teams coming close to adding to the score. Harry was having a great game on the left, causing problems for the right back and providing some good balls for the front 2. Just before half time Sawbridgeworth were camped in our half and had a couple of good chances, one being a superb volley from outside the box that James did well to save and we went into the break at square

HALF TIME - Sawbridgeworth Reds 1-1 LGCE Reds

We praised the lads for an excellent first half performance and asked them to give the same again for the second half. They were all on a high and couldn’t wait for the game to restart.

The half started and it was pretty even with the defences on top. Our back 4 of Kieran F, Zak, Carlton and Kane were keeping their dangerous forwards quiet as well as setting us up on attacks. As the half went on, the rain got worse and it was looking more and more like extra time would be needed. Unfortunately for us a freak own goal would change the game with 8 minutes left. After a couple of dangerous crosses, Sawbridgeworth won a corner, as Carlton tried to clear from inside the 6 yard box, the ball skidded off his foot and into our gaol, something the team and especially Carlton didn’t deserve. The goal knocked us for 6 and although we still battled hard we lost our shape and conceded 2 more goals in the last 5 minutes to make the score line look worse than the game suggested.

The final score was 4-1 to Sawbridgeworth, but the way the lads played, with heart, confidence and determination showed what a good side we are and with a little bit of luck on the day, the game may have finished in our favour. A big well done to all the lads who played their part and it was nice to see Jamie have 15 mins at the end on his road to recovery.

So a totally different performance than last week and even though we lost I’m sure the lads feel much better for giving 100% and giving a decent division 1 team a run for their money. Me and Luke came away feeling very proud knowing we gave our all. Well done lads and thanks to our loyal supporters for watching in awful conditions.

Sunday 28th September LGCE Reds V Stevenage Colts Greens (League Cup)

The old saying ‘It’s a funny old game’ describes our game on Sunday. We were up against Stevenage Colts Greens in the League Cup, which meant a 2 nd meeting already this season. We had previously played the Colts for our opening league game, where we won 12-0, this game was to be far from the same.

Luke and me were a bit concerned that the lads may take our opponents lightly, as they had lost all their other games so far and we were able to give them the prime example of Hull winning at Arsenal the day before to prove anything can happen, but this didn’t seem to change the attitude towards the game.

We changed the starting line up, giving the lads who didn’t start last week a start, this mean the new look little Sam joining Carlton at the back, Charlie right midfield, Leon and Calum in the middle and Matthew partnering Jordan up front. We felt that this team was still strong enough and with competition for places hotting up, expected the starting line up to give us a selection headache for next week, for the majority this was not the case.

We started slow for the 2 nd week running and Stevenage looked dangerous on the attack, but some last ditch tackles and shots missing the target prevented these from coming to anything. The game was scrappy but end to end and we began to create some chances, forcing their keeper into some good saves. Halfway through the half we decided to bring Zak on to steady the defence as the Stevenage attackers were getting in behind us far more than we would have liked. Our best move of the game so far ended with Calum hitting a superb volley on to the inside of the post and then roll across the line before being cleared. This gave us a bit of a lift and 8 minutes before half time we went in front. Charlie’s cross into the box found its way to Harry at the far post who nodded it past the defender and volley into the net. A big sigh of relief for all on the sideline as well as disappointment for the Stevenage following.

We reached half time 1-0 up, something we felt we didn’t really deserve, but was hoping a good chat would sort things out.

HALF TIME - LGCE Reds 1-0 Stevenage Colts Greens

We had now introduced our remaining 3 subs, meaning Adam at right back for Kieran F, Aidan at right midfield for Charlie, who both got injured and big Sam for Matthew up top. From the kick off we looked a bit better with big Sam linking up well with Jordan, who was again causing problems for the defence.

Unfortunately we soon stopped playing and started going through the motions once again and the Colts were looking the better team. After some good chances at both ends we scored a 2 nd when our danger man Jordan scored from the edge of the box. There were a couple of blocked shots before the ball fell to Jordan who fired into the roof of the net from 18 yards for 2-0. This should have been enough to boost us into our form of previous games, but after big Sam had a goal ruled out for offside a couple of minutes later we were again under pressure by our opponents. They deservedly got a goal to make it a tense finish when their forward scored with a header from a good left wing cross.

We held on to win 2-1 but we need to improve if we don’t want our good start to the league to be a waste. Plus points were good performances from Jordan, Kane and Calum as well as big Sam and Aidan when they came on. Lets hope this was the warning we needed without losing the game?!

So another win, which is good, but we will need to be on top of our game in future as we look to progress in the cups and keep the pressure on at the top of the league. A big thank you for all your support and help before, during and after the game.

Finally well done to Stevenage Colts Greens for pushing us all the way and it is good to see they are still giving 100% even though they are yet to win, something that wont be too far away if they continue to improve in the same way they have done since our last game

Sunday 21 st September LGCE Reds V Potton Colts

Our second home game of the season brought another of the new teams, Potton Colts, to Pixmore playing fields.  With 2 wins from 2 and both of them excellent performances, we were looking to continue with the impressive football we have played so far.

Before the game we announced the Captain and Vice Captain for the season.  With so many of the lads capable of wearing the arm band this was a really tough decision, but in the end I think all the lads agreed with our choice of Zak as Captain and Jordan as Vice Captain.

We rotated the staring line up again this week bringing Kieran B into centre midfield after he impressed last week, which meant Aidan playing wide right and Harry switching to the left.  We started slowly and conceded a few corners early on but gradually we got into the game and Jordan was looking very lively up front.  We got the opening goal as we were getting on top, Adam won a tackle in midfield, as he did all game and played the ball through to Jordan who kept his cool to score, slotting in to the bottom corner.  This was a sign of things to come for the Potton defence, as Jordan was causing no end of torment for them.  The second goal was a prime example of reward for hard work.  A long ball over the Potton defence saw their goalkeeper as favourite to come out and collect it - but Jordan had other ideas.  He out paced the chasing defenders from the half way line and nicked the ball from the keeper, rounded him and scored from a tight angle.

As half time approached we started to control the game, creating a few more chances without adding to the score and were well worth our 2 goal lead at the break.

HALF TIME - LGCE Reds 2 - 0 Potton Colts

We started the second half with a bang.  A well worked move ended with the ball finding the outstanding Jordan in the area and he completed his hat trick by superbly placing the ball into the top corner for the goal of the game.  We were still dominating and went 4-0 up when Jordan's shot hit the post and went in off a defender before he could clear.

Everyone was playing their part in a really impressive display.  The defence, well marshalled by skipper Zak (that’s twice now Zak) along with Carlton, Kieran F, Kane, Little Sam and Calum, all did a good job protecting James, who did excellent when called upon.  Also Adam was having his best game so far winning every tackle and distributing the ball well to set us up on some good attacks.  With about 15mins to go, Potton scored a great goal that James could do nothing about.  We were caught out by some good football and the Potton player smashed the ball into the top corner.  This seemed to give our opponents confidence as well as their supporters, who became very vocal on the touchline, but we rode the storm and got back on top.  We scored a fifth goal to seal the game when Aidan, who had never scored for the Eagles since joining six years ago, got his third goal in as many games.  Kieran B done well on the right and crossed for Aidan to score from close range.  We seemed to lose our shape towards the end of the game and this gave Potton a couple of chances but the defence and James dealt with these without too many problems.

So another win, but more importantly another superb team performance and if we keep playing like this we will have another enjoyable season with results to match. Me and Luke really appreciate the hard work the lads are putting in so far this season and would like to thank everyone for all the support we had again on Sunday and for helping with the nets, flags, linesman and referee duties. Keep up the good work!

Sunday 14th September - Manuden Juniors V LGCE Reds

After last week’s performance, confidence was high amongst the players and supporters for today’s game away to Manuden Juniors. Luke and myself were well aware that this was going to be a much tougher game to last week and had to make sure the lads were ready for a battle as well as a football match

We arrived at Manuden and the lads were quick to notice a much smaller pitch than last week and the slope from goal to goal. We made a couple of changes to the starting line up with Kane starting at left back and Aidan in midfield, we also had Kieran B available who started as 1 of 4 subs.

Kicking down the slope in the first half we again started well, creating many good chances but without getting the goal we deserved. Credit also goes to our defence and James in goal for staying focussed and preventing any of the Manuden attacks coming to anything

It was about halfway through the first half when we got the goal we deserved. Jordan took on 2 defenders on the left and pulled the ball back for Aidan to finish into the roof of the net for his 2 nd goal of the season. The boys were on a high now and all 4 subs were introduced without affecting our pattern of play. In fact it was only a shocking decision from their linesman that prevented us going into half time 2-0 up. Excellent work in the centre of midfield enabled us to get the ball out to Calum on the right and although big Sam was ahead of play in the middle (not even slightly interfering with play) the linesman raised his flag. The game continued and Calum crossed for Jordan to score from close range….but the goal was disallowed as the linesman insisted big Sam was involved in the build up, a decision that was clearly incorrect!!

HALF TIME - Manuden Juniors 0-1 LGCE Reds

So 1-0 at half time and the lads were frustrated by the decision, so it was up to me and Luke to get the lads focused on the second half and continue to play well.

Manuden started the 2 nd half a lot stronger and seemed to be getting stuck in a lot more, our lads matched this, which pleased me and Luke as this is something we haven’t really worked on. After a couple of half chances for us we were caught out by a long ball over the defence and their forward did well to finish past James. Very soon after this, it was like an action replay, as their forward was clean through after another long ball, this time he crashed his shot against the bar and we managed to clear.

We made some changes to try to stop the Manuden attacks and we were soon controlling the game again. We had some good chances before we got our lead back. Again good pressure in midfield created a through ball for Kieran B, he raced clear of the defence and superbly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper. Welcome back Kieran! Soon after it was 3-1, a cross from the right was turned in to the net by a home defender. Surely that was enough for the win but with 5 minutes to go we struggled to clear our lines and conceded a soft goal that made it 3-2 and a tight finish.

It was Manuden who finished the stronger but some excellent defending and brilliant saves from James, showing how important being a goalkeeper is, ensured we won the game and have maximum points from our first 2 games.

So as predicted, a much tougher game and although we played some really good football we also showed that we will not be bullied and can also match our opponents physically.

Finally, Luke and myself would like to say a big thank you for all the support the team had from their family and friends, as well as Jamie, his dad and granddad, who all made the long trip for the game. Your support is much appreciated by the team and us

Sunday 7th September - LGCE Reds V Stevenage Colts Greens

Reds started the season with a home game against Stevenage Colts Greens. After some good training sessions over the past couple of weeks the moral seemed to be high and it was a difficult decision for Luke and Me to pick a starting eleven.

After losing the girls from last season as well as a couple of the boys we have some new faces to fill the gaps. Unfortunately one of our new players, Jamie, has broken his leg, which will keep him out for the first few months of the season.

We started with a 4-4-2 formation with Adam playing as a defensive midfielder to protect the defence. New additions to the squad from last season were Kieran at right back and Jordan up front. After a good chat and warm up the game began. From the kick off we went on the attack with their goalkeeper making some excellent saves from Jordan and Big Sam. It was an unlikely player who came closest to opening the scoring, Little Sam, playing left back (a very attacking left back) who found himself just inside their penalty area and after good work from Charlie on the left the ball fell to Sam who crashed it against the bar...... was it going to be one of those days?

The answer was ‘No’ as Jordan won the ball from a Colts defender and was clean through on goal. As the keeper slid out Jordan calmly lifted the ball over him and into the net. It seemed as though the team were waiting for Jamie to turn up before scoring because as soon as he got to the sideline it was 1-0.

The goal bought confidence to the whole team and they really started to play some good football. The passing and movement was excellent and the two wide men, Charlie and Harry were getting plenty of the ball and creating some good chances, as well as Jordan working his socks off up front.

Our constant pressure paid off when Big Sam grabbed a couple of quick goals to put us 3-0 up. We made three changes midway through the half and they settled in to the pace of the game quickly. It was 4-0 soon afterwards when Charlie, who was terrorising his defence with his skill and pace, cut in from the left and powered a shot past the keeper with his right foot.

To their credit, Stevenage Colts didn’t give up and although James didn’t have to make a save, they were creating some chances. Just before half time, Big Sam completed his hat trick when he blasted one into the top corner.

HALF TIME - LGCE Reds 5-0 Stevenage Colts Greens

The confidence was nice to see amongst the lads at half time and we just asked them to carry on playing the ‘Sexy Football’ by keeping the shape and playing as a team. This was not ignored as we scored early into the 2nd half. After some good work from Calum on the right, he crossed to the far post for Little Sam to score. More goals were added from Harry (2), Calum, Aidan (as well as hitting the post) and another one each for Big Sam and Jordan. As the half wore on the defence were pushing up to join in on the attacking, this was leaving gaps at the back that the Colts tried to make the most of, but with Carlton having a blinder, stopping everything that tried to get past, James was still without a save.

Carlton was given a rest for the last ten minutes and this was when the Colts had a bit more joy. James was finally called in to action and made two great saves to keep his clean sheet in tact.

The final score was 12-0 to the Reds but credit to Stevenage Colts as they never gave up and with that attitude they will only improve. I remember a certain other team being in a similar position sometimes last season!!!

So a good start to the season for the Reds but with a tough game next week we need carry on with the same attitude and performance.
